2013 Hourglass Cabernet Sauvignon Estate
96+-94 Points Robert Parker's WIne Advocate
From their estate vineyard near the Colgin Tychson Hill Vineyard and the newer Luc Morlet estate vineyards, adjacent to Route 29 across from the Markham Winery, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon appears to be prodigious. Made from the so-called Château Margaux or Bosché Clone of Cabernet Sauvignon, it exhibits copious aromas of spring flowers, crème de cassis, black cherry liqueur, cedarwood and baking spices. Full-bodied and intense with a powerful, strong core of fruit along with extraordinary purity and a long finish, this may turn out to be the finest Cabernet Sauvignon Hourglass has made to date. It should drink well for two decades.

Big, bold and dramatic, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is even better from bottle than it was from barrel. Distinctive notes of mint and eucalyptus open up first, followed by a bevy of red stone fruit, iron, smoke, incense and exotic spices. A flourish of floral notes and a kick of tannin round things out. Intense and opulent to the core, the 2013 sits on the edge of ripeness, but it is a very beautiful wine in its own extroverted way. There is no shortage of personality, that is for sure.

An extremely dark color sets an expectation of concentration, and this full-bodied but velvet-textured wine delivers it. In the aroma are cocoa and licorice and dark-skinned cherries, then the flavors resemble a rich blackberry cherry syrup without the sweetness. The wine tastes exceptionally rich but not heavy. Best from 2020 through 2030.
