2009 Walter Hansel Carneros Chardonnay
The 2009 Walter Hansel Chardonnay comes from Diamond Vineyard
located west of the town of Sonoma in the Petaluma Gap area..near Sonoma Cutrer’s
famous Les Pierres vineyard. The soils are rocky (old Creek bed)
and the vineyard is planted to old Wente Clones. Steve knows
about the vineyard since it was planted by his vineyard manager’s
father..so he knows it’s been done well. He produced 978 cases of
this wine. It is 100% Malo-lactic, and fermented with
indigenous yeast.
The styling of the wine is like a nice French
Macon-Villages… it is loaded with creamy apples, white flowers,
citrus, and wood.. on the palate there are hints of apricots,
pears, apples and minerals. The finish is clean, bright and focused
with plenty of length.
The
wine is exceptionally well-balanced and delivers a ton of flavor
for a ridiculously low price.
It is aged in 1/3 New Francois Freres
barrels (three year air-dried), 1/3 used one year old barrels, and
1/3 in stainless steel sur-lie.
