2008 Shafer Merlot Napa Valley
94pts
(CGW)Always one of the richest and deepest Merlots to be
found, Shafer hits the gong again in this vintage with a wine of
amazingly complex, energetic, almost briary fruit whose range and
solidity combine the invitingly lush potential of the variety with
the extra boldness that Cabernet contributes to the party. Like
past efforts, this one seems to invite early drinking but is loaded
with potential to improve in the bottle over the next half decade
and more.
Connoisseur's Guide to California Wine November
2011.
2008 Merlot has a lively, perfumy nose that begins the moment the
bottle is opened – delicious aromas of red cherry, raspberry, red
plum, cherry kirsch. In the mouth are rich, juicy,
palate-enveloping flavors of pure red and black fruit, red
licorice, and hints of mint and toasted almonds. The tannins are
round and smooth and part of the long, pleasing finish.”
