2003 Behrens & Hitchcock Contender
91 points from Robert Parker
91-93 points from Stephen Tanzer
Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate: A combination of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Merlot and Petit Verdot, the 2003 The Contender reveals soft, silky tannin, earthy blackberry and currant, smoke, and mineral aromas, and a surprisingly elegant format. Ripe, medium-bodied, and stylish, it is more of a lightweight than a heavyweight.
Stephen Tanzer's IWC: Good medium ruby. Cool aromas of blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, violet, menthol and licorice. Dense, sweet and lush, with a seamless, creamy texture and plenty of early appeal. Nicely balanced at 14.6% alcohol, this blend finishes quite long, with notes of bitter chocolate and licorice.
